My Hair Affair Secret

Hair chameleon - the way to best describe my hair habits.

Until two years ago, I was quite literally changing my hair colour, style, etc. daily. How you may ask? Wigs. Wigs are my hair secret. A literal hair affair.

Since I can remember, I was always fascinated with trying out new hairstyles. When I was 5 years old, I would cut all my Barbie's hair, colour their hair with markers, and eventually style whatever was left with the odd sparkly clips (lol). One day I felt so confident with my hair styling abilities, I proceeded to cut my own hair - AND YES, I made sure to have a range of lengths going on. Safe to say I was never allowed scissors again, and my Grade 1 school portrait was direct highlight of that.

It's no secret that I am adventurous when it comes to changing up my hairstyles. At 15 I began wearing hair extensions. I started with clip-ins, which to this day I still wear from time to time. I moved onto a more permanent solution - the weave. I have extremely fine hair, which is not preferable for weaves since the hair is more susceptible to breakage. I swear, I'm praying that in my next life I'm a mermaid with long, luscious, and thick hair. I strutted around town with a 26 inch weave, which is quite literally like carrying around a heavy mop on your head all day. I always wore three to four tracks, which panned out to be two packs of hair - again, a mop. Despite now being self-critical, it didn't look too bad.

26" Weave

After a few years of weaving my way through life, I had the brilliant idea that I wanted to go from black hair, to blonde, all in one go. Well it didn't go that way. With plenty of different previous colour appointments, my hair had a variety of layers of dye - making it almost impossible to achieve one tone immediately. To get the blonde look I desired, it took three half-day appointments. I opted for tape-in extensions, which were recommended by my hair stylist. Not my favourite type of hair extensions as sometimes the bond would move, and may or may not matte your hair into a clump, annnnd you may or may not have to drive in a panic to your friend's house in the late evening for help (thank-you Cassie, you saved my life lol).

This is where my hair adventure started to go downhill. My hair had been so overly damaged from all the years of colour, bleach, and hair extensions, I had to think of a solution, and fast. To make matters worse, I noticed my hair was beginning to fall out - I was devastated. With no hair extensions, a huge clump of my hair cut out because of the matte, and my hair falling out, I felt terrible.

Back in 2015, I had a friend with alopecia who I confided in with my hair drama. She regularly wore wigs, and suggested to give my hair a break and try the wig life. At first I was a bit reluctant, but after I saw how good they looked on her, I decided to give it a shot. My love for wigs was sparked, and I was hooked. I bought a variety of different styles at Abantu in Burnaby, B.C, and switched them up daily. On a trip to Europe, I found a wig store in Poland, and bought an amazing brunette wig. Let me tell you, European hair is my favourite. I think I have a cultural hair bias lol. When I came back from Europe, I continued my wig trend. My friends would even joke that they were always curious to see which Ewa would show up to meet them for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Wigs are my favourite beauty hack. Above are just some of the styles of wigs I bought, and they are so easy to use and maintain.

PROS

- Time-saver: cut your time to get ready, in half.

- New hair who dis: try out new hair styles and colours in seconds.

- Non-damaging: allows you to grow out and strengthen your own hair, whilst still having fabulous looks.

-Rain or shine: No stray fly-aways and drowned rat look. Always perfect flawless hair.

CONS

- Not your hair: Definitely had a "oops, my own hair roots are showing at the front" moment before.

- Pricey: Good quality heat resistant wigs to Human Hair wigs can get expensive if you're constantly wearing them; however, if you're wearing them all the time, it's worth it to invest.

Tips: My main advice when it comes to wigs is to do your research and try them on in person. It's tempting to see a wig online and think it's going to look great. Just because it looks amazing on one person, doesn't mean it's going to look fabulous on you. Everyone has different face shapes and sizes, and one wig that looks great on your friend could be not the right fit for you. Don't be afraid to try on styles that you normally wouldn't think of trying - this is the way I found many styles that actually looked good on my face shape. Pay attention to the texture of the wig fibres at the shop. If they already feel cheap and coarse at the store, it's guaranteed they're only going to get more frayed even on the first day you wear the wig.

I recommend my hair secret to everyone. If you're going through hair drama, you're not alone. It will change your life - I know it has changed mine! And if you're just wanting to try out a different look without committing it to your own hair, wigs are perfect for just that. Either way, wigs are a perfect alternative for changing your look quickly and efficiently! My so called hair affair...
